What is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown can be described as a helmet for a tooth. A crown covers the tooth on all sides, improves function and provides strength and protection. Crowns placed on the front teeth can enhance your smile if your teeth have been compromised or damaged by decay or old fillings. Crowns are constructed specifically for each tooth, usually out of ceramic, or porcelain fused to metal or metal like gold.

Modern ceramic crowns are sturdy enough to be placed on any teeth and give the appearance of porcelain crowns. They avoid the formation of unattractive black lines around the crown's edge and blend in perfectly with your teeth.

How Does it Work? - Dental Crown Procedure

A decision to place a dental crown on a tooth will be made after a full exam and x-rays in order to assess the overall health of the tooth.

At the crown appointment, the tooth be first numbed using a local anaesthetic and will be cut & shaped to prepare it for the crown. Next, in order to create a crown that exactly fits the tooth, a mould of the teeth is obtained using a putty-like substance or a 3D scan using our in-house 3D scanner.

Depending on the kind of crown and material, a new crown may be fitted on the same day or on a different day. The same-day crowns are made in our state-of-the-art Cerec 3D scanner and mill. In case the crown is not fitted on the same day, a temporary crown will be placed on the tooth. The temporary crown will be taken off at the second visit, and the actual crown will be cemented in its place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Dental Crowns cost?

The cost usually depends on the material of the crown and the complexity of the treatment. An exact cost can be provided once the tooth/teeth have been assessed by clinical exam and x-rays. We can assure you that we use top labs in the country and all our prosthesis are Australian made.

Does Insurance cover Dental Crown Treatments?

If you have dental extras included in your insurance, a part of the cost for the crowns is covered by dental insurance. The best course of action, though, is to consult your dentist first. Make sure you speak with your dental health insurance to find out what expenses for oral care they will cover.

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is typically required to hold together a damaged tooth or prevent a weak tooth from fracturing. It is the perfect restorative solution that will restore your teeth's performance and improve the appearance of your smile.

How to Maintain a Dental Crown?

It's simple to care for a dental crown the same way you would your regular set of teeth. Start by getting back to regular oral hygiene practice, which includes brushing and flossing twice daily. Additionally, you should schedule full exams and professionally cleans with your oral health professional at least every six months.

What is the Difference between Temporary and Permanent Crowns?

Until your permanent crowns are ready to be fitted, a dentist will sometimes attach a temporary crown to your teeth to offer support, maintain space and prevent sensitivity. Permanent crowns are fabricated specifically for your teeth and will be the exact same colour and form as your original teeth.
